Tired of hinges that snap, don't fit your project, or require you to hammer in a piece of raw filament as the pin? Meet the ultimate Parametric Print-in-Place Butt Hinge.
Designed completely from scratch in OpenSCAD, this hinge prints 100% assembled, flat on the bed, and requires zero supports. Once printed, simply fold it to break the tiny internal clearance tolerances, and you have a perfectly swinging, robust hinge. Because it's fully parametric via MakerLab, you can easily generate thousands of bespoke variations for any project—from tiny jewelry boxes to heavy-duty workshop cabinets!
Customization Guide This model is deeply customizable to fit exact dimensions. Using the MakerLab customizer, you can adjust:
- Hinge Dimensions: hinge_height, leaf_width, and leaf_thickness
- Aesthetics: corner_radius for sleek rounded edges or sharp utilitarian corners
- Screw Holes: Toggle include_screw_holes, then specifically dial in the holes_per_leaf, screw_hole_dia (shaft), and screw_head_dia (countersink) so any hardware you own will fit completely flush!
- Mechanics: Adjust the barrel_radius, choose the number of interlacing knuckles (knuckles_on_a), and fine-tune your printer's tolerance using the clearance gap.
Printing Recommendations
- Material: PETG or ABS/ASA is recommended for strong mechanical hinges, but PLA works fantastic for light-duty boxes and storage containers.
- Layer Height: 0.16mm - 0.20mm (Finer layers result in a smoother internal pin rotation).
- Infill: 20% - 40% Gyroid or Grid. Adding extra walls/perimeters (3-4) will significantly increase the hinge's snapping strength.
- Supports: Absolutely NONE! Prints completely flat.
