Snap-Tag Filament Spool System with Integrated Filament Clip, Tag Support, and Multiple Pattern Variants
This project is a complete two‑piece filament spool system designed for refill‑style filament that ships without a spool. It combines the strongest ideas from several existing designs while solving the mechanical and aesthetic issues found in screw‑together spools. Each spool half is a unified part that includes the rim, tag system, snap‑fit hub, and one of several custom sidewall patterns.

 

🛠️ Why This Spool Was Designed
Threaded, screw‑together spools have two major shortcomings that motivated this redesign:
•     The halves can slowly loosen during printing due to vibration or filament tension.
•     When fully tightened, the halves often end up rotated out of alignment, causing the sidewall patterns to be visibly asymmetrical and ruining the clean, centered look of the spool.
Despite these issues, some threaded designs had excellent features worth preserving — especially the integrated filament clip on the rim and the tagging system for labeling filament. This spool keeps those strengths while replacing the unreliable screw mechanism with a secure, alignment‑perfect snap‑fit lockable system.

 

🌀 Integrated Filament clip with Tag Support
The outer rim incorporates a built‑in filament clip. The filament feeds securely into the rim without external clips, and a tag slot provides a clean, consistent way to label filament type or color across all spool variants.

 

🔒 Snap‑Fit Hub with Positive Locking Clip
The center hub uses a snap‑fit assembly modeled after Bambu Lab’s spool architecture. A locking clip prevents the two halves from separating during printing or under high filament tension. Because the halves snap together in a fixed orientation, the sidewall patterns remain perfectly aligned and symmetrical every time — something threaded spools cannot guarantee.

 

🎨 Six Complete Pattern Variants
Each pattern is a full spool half. Every variant includes:
•     The integrated filament rim
•     The tag system
•     The snap‑fit locking hub
•     A unique sidewall pattern designed in Onshape
The current release includes six complete spool designs, ranging from organic rib structures to geometric and radial patterns. All variants print support‑free and share the same functional geometry, allowing users to choose the style they prefer while maintaining identical performance.
More patterns will be added as the platform continues to grow.

Print Recommendations
•     PLA or PETG
•     0.2mm–0.28mm layer height
•     3–4 walls for optimal rigidity
•       15% gyroid infill
•     No supports required

 

Notes
This is an evolving spool platform. New pattern variants will continue to be added, all built on the same proven rim, hub, and locking architecture.
