Description
The first time I read the chapter on Castle Ravenloft in the Curse of Strahd module, not going to lie, I was overwhelmed. 45 pages, 88 rooms, 12 maps, secret doors, vertical overlooks, staircases, crypts, hallways… Yeah, it was a lot. The castle was very vertical and the maps provided in the book weren't very easy to follow. What I really wanted was to look at it in 3D - see where the floors connect, trace each stairway without flipping through a bunch of pages, and just overall get a feel for it in my head.
And so I built this - a 1:750 (or, to be precise, 1:762) model of Ravenloft with all of the interiors. Each 5ft square of the castle is scaled down to 2mm. The walls, staircase steps, and some furniture are scaled up a bit to make it easier to print. Most of the contents of the rooms are just simple shapes since a normal FDM printer won't be able to get much more detail anyway, but they still help understand which room is which. Also just a disclaimer - some stairs and rooms don't line up perfectly (K45 in particular), but they should still be mostly accurate.
The castle is built in layers, one per floor, with each layer showing the interior of that floor. The layers are held by magnets so that it's easy to connect and disconnect them. Each layer has holes at the top and bottom for the magnets to slide in, and personally I prefer to secure them with a drop of superglue. Overall, you will need:
The magnets go in the round holes at the top and bottom of each layer. As a rule of thumb, the magnets at the top of the layer should stick out by about 1mm, and the magnets at the bottom should be 1-1.5mm below the surface - this makes it so that the layers automatically align with each other.
Depending on the tolerance of your printer, for the first 3 layers (ground floor and 3 basements) you might need to use 3mm tall magnets for the top holes.
I recommend buying a few extra magnets to be safe, they tend to get lost.
For the print settings, I personally used the following:
Anyway, that's about it, good luck with your games! Hope your players find this prop as cool as my players did.
Boost MeI was working on this project on and off for almost two years, a boost would mean a lot to me!
