Astrolabe

An Astrolabe is a beautifully intricate instrument once prized by scholars and navigators of the old world. Typically crafted from gleaming brass or bronze, it consists of a disk engraved with celestial markings, movable arms and an ecliptic piece called a Rete. By aligning these parts with the sun and stars, an astrolabe allows its user to chart the heavens, tell time, and find direction—even predicting the rise of the sun or the arrival of dawn. 

As a centerpiece in a magic gathering, the Astrolabe embodies the mysterious union between science and sorcery, inviting wonder with every turn of its celestial wheels.

Although the Astrolabe is not as accurate as today’s devices, it was in widespread use for nearly 2000 years. A curious astronomer who wants to learn more about medieval observing practice may find it hard to find one. Historical examples are highly valuable and usually found in glass cases in museums.

The Astrolabe is composed of unique parts, including the Mater or Mother, the Climates Plate, the Rete, the Rule and the Alidade.
