Yarn Mane Unicorn Wall Hanging

This one was a bit of an experiment - I really like combining mediums and I have been toying with an idea for a unicorn with a real mane ever since I made the unicorn yarn bowl. It took a lot of trial and error but I finally came up with a model that works, and I have been having so much fun making up color combos from my very extensive yarn stash - this one is great for those little odds and ends you couldn't bear to part with!

 

All the parts are printed separately and then glued together (I do recommend glue - depending on your particular printing tolerances they may stay together but better safe than sorry). Technically none of the parts need supports but I've added them onto the head because it makes things a bit neater. The eyes are set up for AMS printing because I like to print them on a reflective plate (the plate is set up for that as well) but can absolutely be printed separately - just make the star and moon negative spaces and you should be good to go.

 

As for the mane, you will print all the parts and then take the one labeled "mane insert" and use a darning needle or crochet hook to pull in loops of yarn, and then just tie them off and slide the insert into the head before you glue everything together. You can use really any size of yarn - the holes are big enough to pull through blanket yarn at the full size. I've been using worsted yarn and I like the top of the mane to be really full, so I pull through two or three strands in each hole of the top two rows and then one or two in each of the other holes. I also tried DK and sock weight yarns and they worked great, you'll just need to add in however much you want until you like how it looks. Fluffy yarn works great here, or any of the shiny "fashion" yarns that are pretty but annoying to wear. I really love to untwist the yarn once I've got it all installed for a full, fluffy look. This is great for experimenting, so go nuts!

 

There are pilot holes included on the back of the plaque so that you can put a sawtooth hanger on there for easy hanging, but you can choose to delete them if you have another solution, or change the distance between them if your hangers are a different size than mine. I hate drilling pilot holes at the end so I'd rather just build them in. These scale up and down beautifully, I tested down to 50% but honestly I think you could go lower - I do recommend that you keep the mane strip at .7 thick, but the channel it goes in is designed for scaling so you shouldn't have to do anything more complicated. I also have the print file set to a fuzzy print surface on the surface of the unicorn because I really like how it looks, but you can change that as well, just go to the fuzzy paint tool and erase all the fuzzy painting.
