Ergonomic Pen
This is an extremely comfortable pen with a reliable clicking mechanism.
It is just a variation of the INCREDIBLE original work here.
Instructions
A full pen is built with:
- Pen Case
- 1️⃣ tip end where the writing tip comes out
- 2️⃣ clicker end where the pen clicker lives
- 3️⃣ Internal Clicker Mechanism
- this part looks a bit like a lightsaber I suppose
- This goes at the non-writing end of your pen ink cartridge
- This part interacts with the internal geometry at the top of the clicker-end casing to create the clickable pen extension/retraction behavior
- 4️⃣ Pen Clicker Cap
- this part looks like a cup with serated edges
- this part goes on top of the clicker mechanism at the tip of the ink refill before you screw the pen together.
- This is the part you actually push with your thumb to activate the pen
You then need a pen ink refill and a pen spring.
Changes from the original:
I had two problems with the original
- The original is explicitly designed for printing with a 0.2mm nozzle, but I'd like to be able to print with 0.4mm by default and only make it higher detail for special prints.
- The original did not work with the ink I like - the ink refills I prefer are the Pentel Energel. These are about 5% larger in diameter than the Uniball refills the original was built for.
To address these issues, I did the following:
- Expanded the tip casing hole to make it easier for a wider variety of pen ink refills to work smoothly in the pen
- labeled the components in english for my own understanding
- scaled the entire model enough to let the pen refills I like work
- 👍 thankfully, it seems that the previous uniball refills still work fine in my variation too!
- All together, I've tried g2 inserts, uniball one and one p refills, zebra gel pen refills, and of course the Pentel Energel refills. No issues so far with any
- Provided small, medium, and large internal click mechanisms
- The original internal mechanism was pretty fragile for me, but luckily it seems just the upscaling + 100% infill has made them very reliable
- I also added a modifier to get the cap to bridge more reliably by filling the cylinder cutout in the center, adding a ton of walls, and printing the walls from the outside in
- this also let me remove the supports for the internal component, making it much easier to print many of them at once and use them without manual finishing
- A note on the length of the internal click mechanism
- I found that I had a weirdly strong preference for a pen that stuck the ink refill tip further out than the original
- different refills, different people all will have a different preference
- The taller you make the mechanism, the less the pen tip will extend!
- this was counterintuitive to me, but it makes sense if you think of the length of the mechanism as providing more room to store extra pen refill length in. Or, I mean that's how I think of it.
- The casings are marked so I can keep track of them in my supplies, but its not important to the design if you want to remove those
- Small = shorter = LONGER PEN TIP = - (minus sign) label
- Medium = the size I preferred = typical pen tip extension = ~ (tilde sign) label
- Large = taller = SHORTER PEN TIP = + (tilde sign) label
