- Difficulty: Expert Level.
- Material: Good quality PLA. PETG or ABS are not recommended due to their support removal challenges on complex structures.
- Supports: Mandatory. Use Tree Supports to minimize contact points. Set the support Z-gap carefully to ensure they can break away easily without pulling on the branches.
- Settings: A 0.4mm nozzle or smaller is necessary. A layer height of 0.12mm or 0.16mm is recommended for detail. Slow down printing speed significantly for the top canopy layers.
- Post-Processing: This is critical. Branch tips will break if any significant force is applied. Use a very sharp knife to cut the support interface. Be prepared to use cyanoacrylate (Super Glue) to repair any minor breaks.
Designer’s Notes
This bonsai was designed specifically as an artistic challenge for 3D printing. The contrast between the robust, heavy trunk and the delicate, ephemeral nature of the branches and butterflies is the core of the piece. If you manage to print and clean this successfully, it will be a truly unique conversation piece!
Please share pictures of your final print (even if you had some branch-breaks!). I’d love to see how it turns out.
