Nintendo 3DS XL & DSi XL Slim Travel Case

This is my take on a travel case for the new Nintendo 3DS XL and the Nintendo DSi XL. This case will safely conceal your new 3DS XL or DSi XL, as well as 6 additional games (7 including the one in the system). 

 

The dimensions are 217.52mm x 127.52mm x 34.95mm tall.

 

I printed this in Bambu PETG HF for strength. I would also consider using PLA Tough+ as well but have yet to try it!

 

I highly recommend printing all three Cartridge Carriers and using them even if storing less than 6 games since they are only held in place by the lid. If only one or two are used, they will move around a lot more and the games will fall out.

 

I designed the case with the use of 3mm adhesive padded foam which can be found on amazon here.

 

To assemble, you will need six (6) M3x35mm socket head machine screws (I used these from Amazon, which have a head with a 5.4mm diameter and 3mm depth). The screw head clearance is a 6mm diameter.

 

For the foam, you can cut any sizes you'd like for each of the panels, but I will list what I used:

• The bottom of the base and lid each use a 140mm x 90mm piece of foam
• The back side of the base I used 10mm x 15mm pieces on each column as seen in the picture below
• For the sides of the base, I used 90mm x 15mm pieces of foam
• For the front of the base, I used 40mm x 15mm pieces of foam

I've also added plates for lids with the Nintendo DSi XL and new Nintendo 3DS XL logos for anyone storing a specific console!

ADDITIONAL NOTES

 

There will be a slight bit of wiggle in the y-direction when used for a DSi XL, which will not harm the console in any way due to the thick padding. This is to make the clearance also compatible for a new 3DS XL. 

 

SINCE taking the photos, I've added a 1mm fillet to all the outside edges of the Cartridge Carriers, making them SIGNIFICANTLY easier to remove from the case.

 

I've also added an additional TPU seal that you can print and superglue into the case, but I will post the results when i print this for myself. Personally, I don't think it is 100% necessary on this model, but included it in case anyone would like to have a slight added layer of sealing/protection to their console.

I can now confirm that this case IS compatible with the 1st generation 3DS XL!! No changes necessary, I just wanted to make sure with a physical fitment test before advertising as such. I will add a 3DS XL logo lid soon!

I've added a new model/profile while I figure out how I want to store games in the new A1 compatible case! I will upload model photos  when I can but it should print no issue, it has the same internal dimensions as the full-size case. I will add A1 mini compatible cases for the other DS consoles soon. In the meantime, A1 mini users can also print the 3DS & DS Game Cartridge Case to store games! Enjoy!
