AKG, K7XX Clamping Earphone Adapters

This is a polished version of the adapters I designed and have been using for years on my AKG K7XX headphones. I had oringinally tried a few flat versions, but had a lot of issues with the pads staying in place, coming lose or twising off and falling off the headphones.

This version has some improvements that I think most will appriciate:

  • Two part design, clamping the earpads in place so they can't slip off.
  • Slightly thicker clips with a chamfered edge to lock the pads in place on the headphones.
  • Larger inner diameter so the foam can hold in place.

There are probably ways todo this without any hardware, however I just wanted somethihng that would hold for a long time, and this was how I designed the first version, which held for years. In order to hold the two pieces together, you will need 4x, M2 Self Tapping screws, preferably no longer than 6mm long.

Installation

(I used Brainwavz XL earpads)

  1. Slip the inner ring (The one with the 4 screw posts) inside the earpads, with the posts facing outwards (See pics).
  2. make sure the earpads are centered.
  3. Align the top piece, so the posts go inside the cutouts.
  4. It should press together, put the 4 screws in, but only thread them about 50%
  5. Once you have the screw in place, check alignment, press down 1 corner at a time and tighten screws in opposing corners until they are all tight.

Note: You will screw through the earpad lip, I have had no issues doing this, but if you plan on using the earpads on different headphones, and intend to remove and re-add this ring, it might not be the best option. I may work on a screw free version in the future if I get time.
