Hi!
I’d like to present my latest project – a modern wall-mounted planter holder that lets you showcase your favorite plants.
This is a DIY project intended for self-assembly. I was inspired by the one made by Lofted Goods; but I like to do things on my own.
The entire design is based on 25 mm diameter beech wood dowels. Due to the hardware used, scaling the models is not recommended.
The planter has a diameter of 100 mm and a height of 85 mm. I recommend not planting directly into the printed planter – it’s better to use it as a decorative outer pot for standard nursery pots. They’re inexpensive, and this approach makes cleaning and rearranging much easier.
Bill of Materials:
- 4x ø6×40 mm wall plug with screw,
- 2x ø4×16 wood screw,
- 4x DIN 985 M4 self-locking nut,
- 4x DIN 7991 M4x30 countersunk screw,
- 1x beech wood dowel - length as required (I suggest to use at least 400mm),
Assembly instructions:
- Print all parts from the project. The files are prepared so that models requiring supports or a brim do not need any modification. Most parts do not require supports; if they are not present in the provided files, they are not needed. One mount with two planters requires printing 1x PLATE 1 and 2x PLATE 2.
- Prepare 25 mm diameter beech dowels. I used 400 mm long sections. My dowels are straight, with a diameter tolerance of ±0.1 mm – the more precise the dowels, the better.
- Prepare mounting holes in the wall. I used 6x40 mm wall plugs. I recommend using a laser level or plumb line to ensure the holes are aligned. The spacing between holes within a single mount (03-00-15-003-DOVETAIL WALL MT) is 20 mm. The spacing between mounts depends on the dowel length and is equal to L – 40 mm, where L is your dowel length. Each mount requires two holes.
- Attach the wall mount (03-00-15-003-DOVETAIL WALL MT) to the wall.
- Slide 03-00-15-002-TOP HANGER and 03-00-15-004-BOTTOM HANGER onto the dowel, then drill 2.5x16 mm holes into the ends of the dowel. To ensure concentric holes, you can use the holes in the mounted parts as a guide.
- Place the dowel with the mounted parts on a flat surface, then fasten them using 4x16 mm wood screws.
- Insert two DIN 985 M4 lock nuts (or standard DIN 934 hex nuts or similar) into the dedicated hexagonal pockets in 03-00-15-005-DOVETAIL HANGER.
- Slide 2x 03-00-15-005-DOVETAIL HANGER onto the dowel (it should “click” into place with noticeable resistance, depending on the dowel diameter tolerance).
- Position the hangers as desired (e.g., one facing left and one right, each tilted 30–60 degrees from the plane perpendicular to the wall), then lock them in place using DIN 7991 M4x30 countersunk screws. Each hanger requires two nuts and two screws.
- Insert 06-00-03-003-PLATE into 06-00-03-001-PLANTER, aligning the tabs with the grooves, then attach 06-00-03-002-TRAY from below. Its conical shape helps guide it into place. The locking mechanism is designed to provide a satisfying, tactile click – using different materials is a good idea here. I tested PETG–PETG and PLA combinations, both worked equally well.
- Slide the planter onto the dovetail in 03-00-15-005-DOVETAIL HANGER.
- Place your plants in the planters.
Done!
Keep in mind that this setup is highly customizable – using longer dowels allows you to mount more planters and create different arrangements.
