Camera Slider (GoPro & Smartphone Mount) – Linear Rail System
Description
This camera slider is a DIY linear motion system designed for smooth and stable camera movements. It was developed to reuse parts from old 3D printers, but it can also be fully built using standard off-the-shelf components.
The system uses two precise 8 mm diameter, 360 mm long guide rods combined with 15 mm outer diameter linear bushings, ensuring smooth, low-friction motion for professional-looking video shots.
Suitable for:
- GoPro action cameras
- Smartphones (with mount adapter)
- Product videos, tabletop shots, macro footage, and studio setups
Features
- Smooth and consistent linear motion
- Stable dual-rail sliding system
- Modular and expandable design
- Compatible with GoPro mounts and smartphone holders
- Optimized for reused 3D printer components
- Fully buildable with standard replacement parts
Additional Feature – Custom Camera Mounts
The slider is designed with a universal mounting slot (25 × 16 mm), allowing you to easily create and attach your own custom camera mounts. This gives you full flexibility to design and 3D print adapters for different cameras, smartphones, or accessories, depending on your needs.
Technical Specifications
- Guide rods: 8 mm diameter, 360 mm length
- Linear bearings: 15 mm outer diameter (LM8-type bushings)
- System type: dual-rail slider
- Recommended material: PETG or ABS for durability and rigidity
Required Purchase Parts (if no recycled parts are available)
If you are not reusing parts from an old 3D printer, you will need:
Linear Guides
- 2× 8 mm linear steel rods, 360 mm length
(also known as 8 mm smooth rods or hardened guide shafts)
Linear Bearings
- LM8UU linear bearings (8×15×24 mm)
- 15 mm outer diameter
- Widely used in 3D printer systems
Optional upgrades
- PTFE or silicone lubricant for smoother motion
- Aluminum or carbon base plate for increased rigidity
- Rubber feet for vibration damping
Assembly Notes
- Ensure both rods are perfectly parallel for smooth operation
- Insert bearings carefully without tilting or forcing them
- Light lubrication improves glide performance significantly
- Mount the slider on a stable and level surface
Project Idea
This design was created to give old 3D printer components a second life while building a functional and precise camera motion system. It is affordable, modular, and fully DIY-friendly, making it suitable for creators who want smooth cinematic camera movements without expensive equipmen
