The Ultimate DMs Kit

I've taken the portability of the Ultimate Players Kit and scaled it majorly to form the Ultimate DMs kit!

Two boxes form storage for everything you could need to run a session. The kit comes in two halves, each folds up to become a portable carrying case, with enough room to fit your entire kit, and when its assembled and unpacked it turns into a stunning setpiece for your games.

Customizable Storage

Each box is big enough to store 2 standard DND books or you can add in the available inserts for minis shelves or drawers to keep all of your kit organized.

Features

  • Hidden magnets inside each door panel, letting you hang up session notes or DM guides
  • A4 paper storage - Each door panel can fit up to 20 pages per door! Store your notes, or extra character sheets
  • Built in initiative tracking - Each door contains extra magnetic panels to allow you to quickly add initiative order
  • Dual Dice Towers - One facing the DM for private rolls, and another facing the players for public rolls
  • Customizable shelf inserts - add shelves or drawers to suit your DM style.
  • Securely store your kit - Each side folds together and clips closed securely with latches
  • Portability - each side has a handle for easy carrying, and the handle is long enough that both sides can easily be carried together in one hand.
  • No AMS required. All decorations are assembled as parts and so the entire kit can be printed with or without an AMS unit.
  • Snap together construction - most of the kit can be built with just the included snap connectors

Materials Needed

  • Super glue
  • 4x M3x20 socket head bolts and nuts
  • 6x 20x3mm magnets
  • 28 6x3mm magnets for the hidden magnetic panels - you can use less if you only want certain spots to be magnetic
  • 26 6x3mm magnets for the initiative tracking - you can use less if you don't want initiative tracking or only want one side to be magnetic.

Print Profile Settings

Please use the print profiles provided if possible. They have been tested on multiple slicers and should work for most klipper based slicers. There are a lot of per-object customizations that have been done, and a heap of manually painted supports, especially on the dice towers.

Mostly I use standard print profile settings.

0.2mm layer heights

Support Overhang Threshold: 23% - This stops supports from generating inside the dice tower

Supports on build plate only

Critical supports only

Print orientation: Most decorative panels should be printed vertically, so add a 10mm brim to the outside to keep it grounded. Print with the connection holes facing up so that if there are warping issues it doesn't affect joints.

Note: The dice tower and tower door is the only thing that should need supports, everything else should have supports disabled as they aren't needed and unnecessarily slow down printing. The overhangs for almost every decorative piece have been designed to not need to be supported (45 degree angles etc) but the brickwork sometimes tricks the slicer into thinking you need it, so I would recommend just disabling it except for the dice tower and the dice tower door.

Assembly

The kit is designed to be assembled mostly with snap together clips, though some glue will be needed for the dice towers and for the extra decorative panels.

Assembly Video

A full build of one half of the tower can be found here:

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DXUmJ0gCdIB/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Step 1 - Assemble the dice tower

  1. Using a bit of glue on each of the towers pegs, build the dice tower.
  2. Insert the dice door into the door frame at the bottom
  3. String a piece of filament through the holes at the bottom through the door hinge.
  4. Note: the door may need some minor adjustments to fit - different filaments print at different sizes and you may need to sand back the door frame a little to get the fit you want.

Step 2 - Assemble the main box

  1. Start by assembling the main box frame together - be concious of making sure each side is upright (the edge with the connector holes are both facing up)
  2. Using the included double sided connectors, and the connector insertion tool (included in each profile), insert snap connectors into the main box frame. Once the connectors are in one side, I find that connecting the side with the connectors to the sides with the receivers is made easier with a few light taps with a small hammer.
  3. Add the snap connectors around the permiter of the main box frame
  4. Using snap connectors, assemble the front facing panels (castle walls), again I find light tapping with a hammer to be very effective in joining the two halves.
  5. Lay the facade onto the frame, making sure that the the correct side is up (the side of the box frame with the handle hinges is facing upward, and press fit the frames snaps into the facades snap receivers.
  6. Add decorations. Using a bit of super glue, add the decorations to the main box castle face - the door and the two rounded windows.
  7. Add in 20mm magnets to the inset circles on the side, making sure that the polarity matches the correct direction so the boxes join together
  8. Using the m3 bolts, add the handle to the top of the box.

Step 3 - Join Main Box to Dice Tower.

  1. Slide in the two dovetailed threaded slides into the approriate place in the dice tower taking care to ensure one threaded hole is at the top and the other is at the bottom.
  2. Optionally, add a drop or two of glue to the dovetail inserts for a more secure assembly
  3. Line up the main box with the threaded holes, and using the included printed bolts screw the two panels together. Don't over tighten the bolts or you risk snapping them
  4. Tip: I've found it sometimes easier to drive the bolts through the threaded holes while disassembled to allow the two parts to break eachother in before assembling.

Step 4 - Build the Door panels

  1. Similarly to the main box, the door panels are all joined using the snap connectors.
  2. Start by joining the inner top panel to the inner bottom panel. A few light taps with a hammer can help here as well.
  3. Optionally - add the magnets to the inside of the inner panel, taking care to maintain the polarity the same for each magnet you add. These magnets should seat lower than the opening, so make sure they sink all the way to the bottom.
  4. Add in snap connectors around the perimeter of the inner panel
  5. Assemble the Outer Panels
  6. Join the assembled outer panels to the inner panel
  7. Optionally - add magnets to the initiative tracking section of the outer panel
  8. Using a bit of super glue, add the window decorations to the outer panel.

Step 5 - Join the door panels to the dice tower

  1. Using a long piece of filament, line up the door panel to the hinges on the dice tower and carefully thread the filament through to form the hinge.
  2. You may need to lift and adjust the door as you are passing the filament through to clear the pathway, but you should be able to get filament all the way through.
  3. Optionally - apply a little heat to the end of the filament hinge to secure it in.
  4. Add the door latches to the door panel, making sure the latch is facing the right direction.

Step 6 - Customize

  1. Insert whatever shelves you want or drawers and get ready for your next session!

Other tips for success

  1. Please use the print profiles provided if possible. They have been tested on multiple slicers and should work for most klipper based slicers. There are a lot of per-object customizations that have been done, and a heap of manually painted supports, especially on the dice towers.
  2. Check and double check your slicer results before you hit print. A little bit of advanced checking can save heaps of filament.
  3. This is a big project, and each half uses ~1.3kg of filament, so make sure you know that going in you will need ~2.5kg of your main filament.
  4. Please note going into this: this is a serious build. It's not difficult by any means but it does take like an hour to build so be prepared for that in advance
  5.

Special Thanks

A special thanks to my makerworld subscribers and especially discord user McMike who put in some serious hours and filament beta testing this!
