Description

An all-in-one solution for replicating odd shapes, copying hole patterns, and general complex measurement tasks.

This infinitely expandable tool consists of 20cm rods (with mm, inch, and rotation degree marks) which can be attached together at any length/angle and tightened down. This allows you to easily copy and transfer odd shapes for things like tile fitting and organisation. You can also use the hole marking pins to align the jig with the holes/mounting points of things like picture frames, then transfer those measurements easily to markings on the wall by simply pushing the points of the pins into the wall to leave a mark.

Even with just one rod and 2 hole marking pins, this is extremely useful for finding hole centers and marking that out on paper or a wall.

Each set of 1 rod + connector takes around 45 minutes to print, and printing more than one set at once decreases time significantly. To print 5 rods and 4 screws takes only ~2.5 hours.

Features

  • 200mm length, with mm and ¼ inch marks
  • Markings every 10º of rotation at the ends to allow angle measurement
  • Infinitely expandable - print as many rulers and screws as you need, print more later if you need it bigger!
  • Hole marking pins allow easy marking of hole patterns for wall mounting
  • No AMS required (1 colour change for different colour markings optional)

Print Settings & Filament

  • Arachne wall generator is crucial for small mm marks
  • Can be printed single colour if preferred but would definitely recommend a contrasting colour for the markings
  • PLA recommended, should also work in PETG/ABS but beware of stringing/blobs with PETG on the small marks

Printing

How many do I print?

The default profiles have 3 rods, 2 joining screws (to attach the rods together) and 2 hole marking screws. This gives you the kit to mark holes up to 60cm apart, and to template a 3 sided shape (like an odd corner).

By cloning or deleting certain parts, you can customise the tool for whatever purpose you want it for. You need one screw/knob to hold together two rods, and two extra hole marking screws/knobs if you want to use the hole marking at the ends of the last two rulers.

So for example if you had something roughly ¾ metre wide which you want to mark holes for, you would need 4 rods (80cm total), then 3 joining screws + knobs to hold the rods together, and 2 hole marking screws + knobs for the ends of the rods. If your holes are <20cm apart, you would only need 1 rod and 2 hole marking screws/knobs.

Or if you wanted to create a template for tile fitting etc, you would look at how many edges you need to mark out, and print 1 rod per edge, plus 1 less screw/knob than the number of rods (e.g. 4 rods needs 3 screws/knobs).

Using Colour

There are two print profiles, designed to give options for those with/without an AMS or more than one colour of filament.

  • AMS or Single Colour
    • For AMS users, this will automatically change colour for the tick marks, simply select your desired marking colour in the 2nd filament slot
    • Or if you just want to print in one colour, use this profile and just delete the 2nd filament (automatic in Bambu Handy app)
  • No AMS - Manual Colour Change
    • This profile separates the rods and screws onto different plates, to simplify colour changes for manual users without an AMS
    • The plate with the rods has a pause for you to manually change the filament for the markings
    • When the print pauses, you need to manually “unload” the filament and load the new filament using the controls on the screen, then resume the print
