After wanting to enter my first contest on here, this wall organiser came to me with inspiration of the famous painting from Piet Mondrian. It solves my issue of having pockets full of stuff when I get home. Plus there is room for a creme egg or two.
I wonted to make the design customisable, so the letter & key rack are optional. With a universal way of mounting, you can also design different accessories easily. I stayed with Mondrian's love for square edges in my design's and with only one part needing supports, it is easy enough to print and for you to customise. You can even connect multiple drawer units together to expand the design.
I really like the way the textured plate looks on prints. I feel it brings a professional feel to the print, so I have designed this in a way that every front facing surface has the textured look. I also wanted this design to be available to creators without AMS, this also makes it every easy to change the colours and very little poop waste.
Everything just clips together so the only fixings you need are to attach it to a wall, although the drawer unit can but used sat on a desk. Glue is recommend in places but if it prints like mine did, it isn't required. I used PLA, Supports on the frame only, All at 10% infill with 2 walls and 4 layers top and bottom.
In the included print profile, I have turned on supports for the frames and object level. You will find 4 frames and you need to pick the one that suits your needs. One has no slots top and bottom for the accessories, another has only top slots, bottom slots and one that has both top and bottom slots. You only need to print the one frame that suits your needs. The only thing different between frames, is the accessory slots.
In my print profile I have also separated the different colours to single plates, if you don't want the accessories you will need to remove their coloured parts from the plates before you print.
I have also included a drill guide for easy drilling if you are attaching the organiser to a wall. Assembly of the drawers and position on the frame are marked on drawer box and front. T means top, M means Middle and B means Bottom. The number is the position from left to right.
Using the drill guide
Print the final plate marked drill guide. It is only 3 layers at 0.2mm so takes a few min and little filament. Place the guide on the wall where you would like the unit, use a spirit level to make sure the guide is level and mark through the holes.
You only need 30-40mm screw, The hole is 5mm and the counter sink will take upto a size 5 counter sink screw head. Drill the marked holes for the size of plug suitable for the plugs you are using. If in the UK I would recommend a 5.5mm drill bit and a red rawplug, for a brick wall. If you don't plan on using the accessories, only drill for the top 2 holes.
Drawer Assembly
Each drawer front has 2 round pins and a label. Each drawer box has a 2 round pin holes and a label. So for example: drawer front M3 goes with drawer box M3. The pins simply press into the holes. I do recommend some glue first as they will be pulled to open the drawers.
I used Super Glue on mine and a weight on top while they bonded.
Letter Rack Assembly
The letter rack simply just slots together with square pins. This is best done before you attach it to the frame.
First slot the two upstands together.
Then push the rack down onto the 6 pins. Due to the angle the rack prints, the pins are a little tight, but they do go with a little force. If you are unsure, just take a bit off the pins with a file. Just bare in mind I have made the holes slightly larger than the pins to account for the shrinkage on the angle of print.
Then clip the front stripe into place. This is the only place I used glue for the letter rack.
Key Rack Assembly
If you have printed this in PLA all the key rack should just slot together easy enough but tight enough that you don't need glue. You don't have to use the same order of colours as I did.
Attaching the Accessories
The optional accessories simply just slot into the dovetail slots on the back. They self support and don't need any glue..
Mounting The Unit
Once the accessories are attached, if you are using them, its time to mount the unit on the wall. You don't need all 4 screws but they do help strengthen the accessories. At a minimum mount the unit with the top two screw holes.
Now you can put the drawers in. Use the following diagram to help you place them in the right slot.
