Description

Directional reflector for boosting a 5.8GHz wireless signal in a specific direction. It fits a typical stick antenna at the transmitter and/or receiver. I have used it to fix drop-outs in a wireless HDMI transmitter/receiver kit.

Not recommended for Wi-Fi routers where devices are in many directions, especially those with multiple antennas. Less effective for 2.4GHz signals due to both the design and the longer wavelength being harder to boost at this size.

The design is a parabolic trough with a focal distance of 13mm (optimal for 5.8GHz). The mounting points are designed to sit against a 10mm diameter antenna so the centreline aligns with the focal point. 140mm tall, 80mm wide.

Assembly:

Apply aluminium foil to the concave surface using contact adhesive or double-sided tape. Aluminium foil tape (the kind used for sealing insulation or ducting) is even easier, just stick it on directly.

Attach the reflector to the antenna using a cable tie, tape, or velcro looped through the hole behind the mounting points.

Aim the open face of the reflector toward the other unit. For best results, both antennas should be in matching orientation (typically both vertical).
