Modular Honeycomb Garden Trellis

I designed this because I was tired of flimsy tomato cages that fall over and metal trellises that rust. This is a fully 3D printable modular honeycomb trellis system that you can configure to whatever size and shape your garden needs.

 

How it works:

 

Each panel prints flat on the bed with no supports required. The panel edges/rails are designed to curve around round stakes for a clean fit, and attach using standard 4" long and 2.5mm wide zip ties through built-in slots on the rails. Each rail has 3 zip tie slot positions so you can adjust placement as needed. You can stack panels vertically to go as tall as you want, and connect them side by side to go as wide as you need. 

 

Print recommendations:

 

I highly recommend printing this in PETG, PLA High Temp, or ASA if your trellis will be outdoors. Normal PLA will warp and degrade in the sun and heat. I printed mine in SUNLU High Speed Matte PETG and the colors are great if you like a colorful garden to attract those pollinators. It can usually be found for $10 to $12 per kg. 

 

Each of these panels is about 75g, so you can get about 13 per roll. You can use my Calibrated and Optimized - SUNLU High Speed Matte PETG Yellow Profile and save some time and filament. If you don't use my provided print profile, I recommend at least slowing your bridge speed down to 10 mm/s and set your bridge flow ratio to 1.5. With matte PETG and these settings the curvature on the rails prints flawlessly. Each panel takes about 2 hours to print with my settings, but I'm inclined to go slower for better looking prints.

 

What you'll need besides the printed panels:

 

Round stakes or posts. These are the snow stakes I use. You can go 4 panels high with these. Bamboo works great too. You'll also need some 2.5mm wide zip ties. The assorted colors go great with the SUNLU Matte PETG filament colors.
