Tensegrity Cup Holder — Gravity-Defying Hands & Heart

What if your morning coffee could float in mid-air, held by two hands cradling a heart?

This Tensegrity Cup Holder is not just a desk accessory — it's a conversation starter. Using the principle of structural tension, the upper platform appears to levitate above the base, completely defying gravity. Two sculpted hands reach toward each other, holding a suspended heart at the center, while your cup sits safely on top.

How does it work?

Three tie rods and precisely tensioned nylon threads create a stable equilibrium where compression and tension perfectly balance. The result? A floating structure strong enough to hold your favorite mug.

Why this design?

Most tensegrity models are pure decoration. This one is functional. It actually holds your cup while looking impossible. The hands-and-heart design adds an emotional, artistic touch that makes it a perfect gift idea for couples, Valentine's Day, or anyone who loves physics and design. The top base decoration is fully customizable — design your own insert starting from a 120mm diameter base (remember to add tolerance for a perfect fit) and make every piece truly unique.

What makes it special:

  • Fully 3D printed — no complex hardware needed
  • Adjustable tension system with tie rods for perfect leveling
  • Customizable top decoration — design your own insert using the 120mm diameter base as reference (add tolerance for a snug fit)
  • Detailed step-by-step assembly guide with video instructions
  • Only standard M3 screws and 0.35mm nylon thread required

Bill of Materials:

  • 3x M3x6 screws

  • 6x M3x16 screws (hands) + 3x M3x20 screws (tensioners) (or 9x M3x16)
