Suspension Headband / Comfort Strap for Sony WH-1000XM5
This is a 3D-printable suspension strap mod designed to improve long-term wearing comfort for Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones. By introducing a flexible hammock-style support system, it redistributes the headset's weight away from a single pressure point, reducing top-of-head fatigue during extended use.
⚠️ Compatibility Note: This model is designed specifically for the Sony WH-1000XM5. An XM6 -specific version is available here.
Features & Design
- Weight Distribution: The open honeycomb mesh adapts to the curvature of your head, suspending the hard factory headband slightly above the skull.
- Low-Profile Attachment: Features flexible, wrap-around attachment tabs that grip tightly to the lower headphone arms without obstructing the adjustment mechanism.
- No-Hardware Mod: Hooks and wraps into place securely using only the printed material—no screws, adhesives, or permanent modifications required.
Material & Printing Recommendations
- Filament: TPU is strictly required for the necessary elasticity, durability, and skin comfort.
- Tested Material: Duramic 3D TPU 95A
💡 Quick Print Reminders:
- Print Separately: Print the main band and the attachment straps on separate plates (or sequentially). Printing them at the same time increases travel distances and heavily multiplies the chance of TPU stringing.
- Use dry filament to prevent stringing in the honeycomb mesh and ensure strong layers on the tabs.
- Clean your build plate before starting to ensure optimal first-layer adhesion.
💡 Bambu Studio / OrcaSlicer Users: Just open the provided .3mf file. All modifiers, wall counts, and infill zones are already set up and ready to print.
Manual Slicer Settings (For non-Bambu users):
- Attachment Straps: Print at 90% infill to ensure high strength where the tabs pull and lock.
- Main Band Base: Set enough top and bottom layers so that the outer solid edges surrounding the mesh print completely solid (100%).
- The Mesh Modifier: Place a circular modifier over the center body of the hammock. Configure the modifier with 15% Honeycomb Infill, 2 Walls, and 0 Top/Bottom Layers to expose the internal pattern.
Installation Instructions
- Pre-install the Tab: With the main Hammock band facing up, take one side of the attachment strap and insert the first tab downward into the band slot.
- Wrap the Arm: Place the Hammock band behind the headphone arm. Wrap the attachment strap around the headphone arm.
- Lock into Place: Feed the remaining tab into the second slot on the band and pull it tight until it locks flush. (Tip: I find it easiest to insert the lower end of the tab first, then the top).
- Repeat & Self-Center: Repeat the process for the opposite headphone arm. The fit is designed to be snug, yet just loose enough that the attachments will naturally slide and seat themselves right beneath the wider part of the factory headband. Even if you push them down, they will automatically rise back up into the correct position to keep the tension centered.
