Description
I wanted to upcycle my sturdy whey protein canisters instead of throwing them away, so I (probably a bit overengineered) designed this lid pass-through to turn them into water reservoirs for my plants.
The threaded insert mounts into a hole cut into the original lid and provides two sealed pass-throughs:
By routing both through the lid, the reservoir stays mostly sealed. This helps reduce evaporation, keeps dust and debris out, and minimizes light exposure, which in turn helps prevent algae and slime growth.
The lid is also split so I can pass through a full USB cable with its connector intact, making it easy to plug and unplug whenever needed.
I’m using this reservoir together with my ESP32 (ESPHome) automatic plant watering setup. It allows my plants to be watered automatically while I’m away on holiday, so I don’t have to worry about them drying out during hot summer days.
Make sure the holes are large enough for your hose and USB cable.
I’ve also included the source files so you can easily adjust the hole sizes for your own setup.
