Skoda Kodiaq / Karoq MagSafe Charger

Why?

The Skoda Kodiaq has a built in wireless charger, but at least for my iPhone 13 and now 15 it does not work very well, often losing connection with the phone and also making the phone quite hot. Also the car display will give a big notification everytime it starts charging or fails to charge which is very annoying. So I made this to replace it without having to take apart the car. Simple pull out the removable rubber mat at the bottom of the phone compartment and replace it with these. I made it in 2 parts that will friction fit inside. First insert the back piece, then the forward part and push it down until they are flush.

Note: I have been told the Karoq has the same wireless charger and this should fit in there too. If you're not sure just print 1 layer and do a test fit.

I made cable channels to push in the excess wire, which also serves the purpose of keeping the 2 halves together. I did put a small square of double sided tape under the charger itself to keep it from sticking to the phone when lifting it up.

I did then find out that the built-in USB-C ports on the car do not properly handle Power Delivery. After testing with a USB-C tester I discovered that the charger tries to request 9V, which results in the USB-C port resetting, then it tries again ad infinitum, never actually starting the charging. So as a simple solution I bought a nice low profile 12V plug adapter, like this one:

Final thoughts:

Voila, the phone is perfectly secure and no more notifications on the car screen about charging working or not. Also because the phone will be mostly above the surface aside from the charging ring there will be some more airflow for cooling.

Versions:

I added a second version with a cutout for the camera bump on my phone, wether you will need this will probably depend on your phone case. Alternatively you could raise the charging puck up a little bit instead.

Printing instructions:

Infill does not need much, it's mostly perimeters. I emptied out a lot of space to make it a bit faster to print in the prototyping phase but then I actually kind of like the design so I kept it. If you want it to be solid it should be pretty easy to add some modifiers in the slicer to fill in the gaps.

If you have the ability to print in TPU you could merge the 2 halves and print them from flexible material. The only reason it's cut in half is because otherwise you can't insert it due to the shape of the cavity in the car.
