Description

My sister is a big Harry Potter fan, and so I put my fledgling Blender design skills to the test to design a lamp for her, and this was the result.

When i first designed and attempted to print it, the four twisted pillars were a pain to print due to their height and low bed contact. I had several failed prints that failed 75% of the way through the print because the bottom of the pillar came loose from the bed. I did manage to get 4 pillars printed, but i had to slow the print way way down, and also lower my acceleration values way way down in order to minimize the risk of the nozzle exerting enough force on the skinny pillar to make the bottom come off the bed. In order to mitigate this, I've also included an STL file of the base with the four pillars attached. With the large base, this should be easier to print, though it means the pillars cannot be taken off the base. I haven't printed this version, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

The side and top panels with the Harry Potter imagery were printed with glow in the dark filament. I sliced the objects, then in the slicer took careful note of exactly which layer the imagery started to extend above the surface of the panel, and then inserted a filament color change command at exactly that layer, and switched away from the glow in the dark and onto normal Black filament for the imagery.

You only want at most 3 layers for top/bottom to maximize translucency for the side/top panels. Also, be very careful of the infill pattern & density you select for the glow in the dark part. Given the relatively thin nature of the panel, with the light on you can see the shape of your infill. I chose 10% infill, with Archimedean chords (for both the infill, as well as the top/bottom layers). I also went with 3 perimeters.

I did a simple cylinder in the middle to wrap an LED light strip around. Any LED strip will do. I'm sure there are better ways of doing this, but since this was my very first multi-part design in Blender that I've printed, I kept things simple.

I used Rub 'n Buff on the finished model to try to make it look more metallic/antique-like.

I've included the Blender file so you can see just how amateur my 3D design skills are. For the top and top panel cover, i attempted to put little indents and protrusions to help keep it in place, but i made them too small and so they're not really useful, but they don't get in the way, so I just left them there.
