My entry for the sandbox game contest!

A floating island night light with waterfalls and lakes that light up!

If you like this design, and love The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.. check out my latest entry for the Game of the '90s contest: “ALTTP Master Sword Pedestal Night Light”!

Building process:

For easier assembly, follow these steps in order:

  1. Attach the "bottom middle" to the "bottom outside" (8 screws).
  2. Insert the LED strip into the square hole.
  3. Thread the LED strip through the middle of the "bottom bottom" via the square hole and wrap it around, but without installing it just yet.
  4. Pass the LED strip through the large opening of the "water" piece.
  5. Install the "water" piece (4 screws).
  6. Thread the LED strip through the large waterfall of the "island water" piece.
  7. Assemble the "island top" and "island bottom" (2 screws).
  8. Thread the LED strip (which exits from the top of the large waterfall of the "island water" piece) so it passes through the small lake and descends through the small waterfall of the "island water" piece.
  9. Install the floating island on the "island water" (2 screws).
  10. Cut off any excess LED strip.
  11. Attach the bottom of the two waterfalls into the holes of the "water" piece (3 screws).
  12. Install the "bottom bottom" (4 screws).
  13. Glue the "tree bottom" to the "tree branch".
  14. Glue the complete tree to the floating island (note: do not glue between the tree trunk and "island water", so you can remove the waterfall later if needed).

Hardware needed:

  • 20 M3 screws
  • LED strips
  • Glue

Tips:

  1. The tolerance is very tight; I haven't tried it with anything other than PLA, so proceed at your own risk!
  2. The design ensures that all "top" surfaces (grass, water) are printed facing the plate, to benefit from the textured PEI surface.
  3. The design ensures that the support interfaces are not visible once assembly is complete, but if you have support material it's recommended but not mandatory.
  4. The design is split into many pieces to allow printing the various parts with more than one machine at the same time.
  5. There is two kinds of tree branch in the print profile: one that uses gyroid infills as leaves, the other that uses fuzzy skin; choose your favorite!
