Summary
Update April 8, 2025: I've added a 2 hinge version Fusion 360 file. Let me know if there's a desire for a print profile with a few pre-sized boxes.
This is a parametric storage box that uses magnets for the closing mechanism instead of a latch. I was looking for a quality magnetic storage box and couldn't find one so I designed this one. While I've created this box from scratch with my own design, my hinge takes a ton of inspiration from @Hugo. I want to make sure to provide credit here.
Modifiable Parameters
Printing Notes
I've added a printing profile and a folder with step files with a sample of box sizes. These are a good mix of sizes but certainly not all of the possibilities. All the boxes in both the profile and the step files use 4mm x 2mm magnets. In both the printing plate names and the file names the size of the box goes Length x Width x Height. In the parametric files the lid height and bottom height are two different measurements.
Also, in order to cut down on the number of printing plates, I left the step files in the print profile as joined bodies. You'll need to make a quick change to the box you want to print before printing in the print profile. Select the box you want to print and right click. From the right click menu select “Split” and “To objects” See the photo below.
Depending on the size of the box you may need to add another plate here and drag the lid onto the new plate. Arrange the lid on the new plate how you see fit. Then, make sure you place the lid of the box on the building plate using the “Lay on Face” tool. Now you're all set to print! Some of the box sizes will fit the Mini but not all of them.
Assembly
The lid and the bottom snap together with very easy assembly. The magnets require a small dab of super glue to hold them in place. I chose not to mess with press fitting the magnets in the base model as most people have super glue laying around and, depending on the magnet manufacturer, the tolerances of the magnet sizes can be inconsistent. In the base model I left a decent tolerance so most magnets should fit the holes easily.
I've tested the parametric, Fusion 360 file extensively and it has worked through all my testing. If anyone notices an issue don't hesitate to let me know! I'm always open to improvements. Otherwise, enjoy!
