Description

The original box has been around for some time and was designed by me in my early days as a designer.

You can find the original box HERE.

I wanted to tackle the disadvantages of the “old” box and make it even more beautiful and durable than the original. I had to start from scratch and it turned out to be a complete redesign.

The various things that have been improved:

  • The lids are now 4mm thick instead of the original 7.2mm, the division has been changed so that PiP hinge points can be used, the posts have been replaced by mounting with an M3 bolt. (sometimes the post broke off due to poor layer bonding) and for aesthetic effect a dual color pattern was used.
  • The box is optimized for less material use and the locking mechanism is removed.
  • The knob is now attached with two M3 bolts, making gluing unnecessary.
  • Printing is now easier, support no longer needs to be used and printing is much faster. (3,75 hour instead of the original 6,1 hour)
  • Less material use: 168 gram instead of 229 gram

Assembly:

Connect the 2 lids together with the knob using two M3x10 bolts. Two M3x30 bolts are required to attach the lids to the box. Do not overtighten the bolts, the lids must be able to rotate freely!

Use M3 bolts with a flat head and correct length, the type (socket head, button head, self tapping) does not matter much. The hardware parts attached are just a suggestion.

Printing on the A1 Mini:

The published print profile for the A1 mini (80% scale) from Couple Layers (thanks!) mentions that 2-56 screws should be used. (non-metric bolts) and that there will probably be metric matching bolts as well. (he doesn't name them)

The metric corresponding bolts are: M2.5x8 and M2.5x25

The corresponding bolts from the maker supply shop are: AA030 & AA034 (just search in the shop)
