Description
I have lived most my life in Colorado. I have always liked its flag and think of it as one the better designs as it is uniquely identifiable in a sea of flags. Its colors and pattern lead to interesting non-flag designs that clearly denote a Colorado connection. Its colors are representative of Colorado. The blue, white, blue pattern represents the snow-capped mountains with blue skies above. The red represents the reddish colors of the rocks for which Colorado was named. The bright yellow circle in the middle represents the sun as Colorado averages 300 or more sunny days every year. The C has been variously described as representing Colorado; Centennial, as Colorado became a state in the centennial year of the United States; Colorful, as the state often self identifies as Colorful Colorado; Continental as the Continental Divide, at its highest elevation, runs through the center of Colorado north to south; and Columbine, as wild columbine plants are somewhat abundant in the mountains and popular throughout Colorado.
Colorado stands out in many respects. It is the highest of US states, averaging over 6800 feet (2072 meters), with over 58 mountain peaks reaching higher than 14,000 feet (4267 meters) above sea level. It was one of the first states to write equality into its constitution, one of the first to give women the right to vote and forbade religious and racial discrimination in education. It was the first to decriminalize and then to legalize cannabis products. Colorado began with an economic plan to promote agriculture, mining, and manufacturing – with an educational system designed to support the success of those industries. As a result, Colorado has consistently ranked among the top states as to education and the economy, supporting a high number of cutting-edge technologies from aerospace to microelectronics to oil and gas exploration to solar and wind technologies to sustainable agriculture and an inordinate number of National Laboratories and research centers – second only to the Bay area of California. NIST and its atomic clock is headquartered in Boulder. Being as scientific research tends to reference the NIST clock, it makes Boulder, Colorado the center of the universe (lol). Colorado is one of the places where things like hard drives and the 3D engines that underlie CAD/CAM, video games, and 3D printing were first developed. Tourism has been added to Colorado’s supported industries, with the popularity of its many ski resorts and music festivals taking on a decidedly Coloradoan character.
