This image from the James Webb Space Telescope captures the heart of galaxy M74, also known as the Phantom Galaxy. Webb's sharp optics reveal fine filaments of gas and dust in the magnificent spiral arms, winding outward from the center of the image. The lack of gas in the nuclear region also provides an unobstructed view of the star cluster located at the galaxy's core.

The galaxy M74, also known as the Phantom Galaxy, is a beautiful spiral galaxy located approximately 32 million light-years away in the constellation Pisces. It belongs to the category of grand-design spiral galaxies, meaning its spiral arms are well-defined and regular, which is quite a rare feature.

Interesting facts about the galaxy M74:

  1. Highly visible arms: Due to its nearly face-on orientation to Earth, M74 is frequently studied by astronomers, as its spiral arms are remarkably detailed and clearly visible. These arms are rich in young stars and regions with high star-forming activity.
  2. Mass and size: M74 is roughly the same size as our Milky Way, with a diameter of about 95,000 light-years. It contains around 100 billion stars and large amounts of gas and dust, which support the formation of new stars.
  3. Star-forming regions: There are many H II regions in its spiral arms—bright nebulae where new stars are formed. This process emits radiation, giving the galaxy's arms a striking brightness.
  4. Supernovae: Several supernovae have been observed in M74, the most notable being SN 2002ap and SN 2013ej. SN 2002ap was a type Ic supernova, one of the few well-documented events of this kind, while SN 2013ej was a type II-P, which sparked interest in the detailed study of supernovae in galaxies similar to ours.
  5. A favorite target for amateur astronomers: Due to its relative proximity and orientation toward Earth, M74 is a popular target for amateur astronomers and is considered one of the best objects for observation with medium-sized telescopes, especially in dark areas with minimal light pollution.

Thanks to its location and beautiful structure, M74 helps scientists better understand the dynamics of spiral galaxies, star formation processes, and the chemical composition of cosmic objects.

Print at 100% infill with a layer height of 0.08mm with a base layer of 0.16mm

The Model is 200x150mm in size

You may print at higher layer heights below the Min Depth of 0.48mm

The Max Depth is 2.2mm and the Actual Depth is 2.2mm

Filaments Used:

PLA BambuLab Basic Black Transmission Distance: 0.6

PLA BambuLab Basic Red Transmission Distance: 4

PLA BambuLab Basic Orange Transmission Distance: 5

PLA BambuLab Basic Jade White Transmission Distance: 5

This print uses 4 unique filaments

Swap Instructions:

Start with Black

At layer #6 (0.56mm) swap to Red

At layer #11 (0.96mm) swap to Orange

At layer #21 (1.76mm) swap to Jade White for the rest.

You can print only the image itself or use the attached thematic frame as well.

If the picture doesn’t fit smoothly into the prepared frame, simply trim the corners slightly. Any unwanted fine strings on the print can be removed by quickly passing a flame over it. Please be cautious with fire.
