Description
This is a fidget toy for my desk that I designed to fit over my large thumb. The gears can be easily moved using the knob on top of the inner sun gear, or the large outer ring gear. The outer ring gear can be slid/wiggled up and down the planet gears to where you want it.
My thumb is quite large, so if you want the inner diameter of the main body modified to be smaller let me know in the comments.
The model is designed to be printed directly on the print bed with no supports. I used a 0.4 nozzle with a 0.2mm layer height for everything, and printed the above model using Extrudr NX-2 neon yellow and black.
Ruthex Inserts
Install the 3x M2 ruthex inserts in the 3 arms of the main body that form the carrier for the planet gears. Install the M3S ruthex insert in the hole in the middle of the top of the main body. |
Gears
| Place the large ring gear carefully over the main body so that it rests at the bottom as pictured. | |
Place the planet gears carefully over the pins at the bottom. As the planet gears have different hole depths try and put them all in the same way up. It does not matter which way up. You can probably easily tell which end was on the print bed. |
Final Steps
Add the carrier over the planetary gears, carefully aligning the pins into the gears. This is a little fiddly. Following this, screw in the 3x M2 screws and washers into the holes. | |
Place the M3 washer and screw on your screw driver and put the insert on top of the screw, then insert the knob/sun gear over the top.

This bit is a little fiddly also. Hold the main body assembly upside down and align the screw in the knob on top of your screwdriver with the hole in the main body. You will need to possibly gently wiggle the gear into place and screw it in tight. |
