7-in-1 Board Game Box Set

About the Design

I was initially designing a travel board game set that was hinged and had two boards on the outside and one on the inside with a cavity for all the pieces. I remember magnetic board games when I was younger and wanted something similar. Unfortunately, that got a little too complex, the hinges didn't work, etc.

 

I realized instead, I could design an entire set that was modular with multiple separate boards so several games could be played at once but also share the pieces between them for simplicity. I decided to tackle some of my favorite games like Chess, Mancala, and Ludo (or Parcheesi? I'm still not sure what the difference is) and added in new games that I finally learned to play!

 

What's Included

The 3mf gives you five large boards: Nine Men's Morris, Chinese Checkers, Ludo, Backgammon, and Chess & Checkers (they share the same board, but feel free to print a second), a Mancala board, five small boxes for the pieces (Chess, Large Checkers, Small Checkers, Ludo, and Chinese Checkers pegs), a large storage box for the small boxes and Mancala board, and all the pieces to print and play. The best part is, the game boards are the lid (just don't turn upsidedown. Magnets are strong, but not strong enough to hold up the weight of the boards).

 

The only thing not included are dice (when all put in the large storage box, there is room for some 16mm dice) and the 6x3mm round magnets.

 

Magnets

For the magnets, they fit in with no glue for me and some had to be forced in. Best way to ensure the magnets are sunk into their sockets is to use an inserter (this is my favorite one) and also to get a ratchet clamp with a trigger to push it in all the way. Boards are 4mm thick, so the 3mm magnets on the underside provide a decent hold to the board below.

 

Special Notes

The boards print face down on a Smooth PEI sheet (just for the finish and I find printing face down makes a cleaner board in the end as opposed to having the board face up) and the pieces and game boxes print on Textured PEI. Additional print profiles have been added for all Textured or all Smooth plates.

 

One thing to be aware of is that both Ludo and Chinese Checkers use 7 and 8 filaments on the same layers so the original print profile omits the A1 series from being able to print. There are additional AMS Lite friendly profiles that omit Ludo and Chinese Checkers. I'll look at maybe making a micro version for the A1 Mini.

 

Also, please note, the photos might not look as good as yours will print because I made a few mistakes in orientation, I didn't clean my build plates well in advance, and I, stupidly, had Concentric infill set for the bottom shell layers. That's now been fixed, but I ran out of some filaments printing these and got lazy and didn't reprint (not including the 2 spools I went through prototyping the piece storage boxes).

Filaments used in this model:

Numakers: Pitch Black, Pure White, Lemon Yellow, Nuclear Red, Outrageous Orange, Royal Blue, Light Gray, Light Blue, Forest Green, Lavender Violet, Ryobix Green, and Chocolate Brown (Light Blue and Ryobix Green were substitutes for Light Gray because I ran out) - used for game pieces and boards

Printbed: Sea Crystal, Purple Crystal, and two mysteries (translucent orange and translucent dark blue) - used for Mancala pieces
