This is a lid with an expanding tube designed for a 20-liter bucket, enabling the construction of an air filtration mechanism for exhaust from a spray booth or airbrush, facilitating indoor work. The filtration operates by directing air containing paint or varnish particles into the water surface, allowing contaminants to bind with water molecules, similar to water vacuum cleaners or water traps.
To build the complete filter, you’ll need:
- 20-liter bucket filled with a few inches of water (add a few drops of dish soap to reduce surface tension).
- Printed lid with an air extension, directing airflow near the water surface. The lid and the air extension should be glued together for a secure fit.
- Original bucket lid modifications:
- Drill or cut a center hole with a diameter of at least 87mm.
- Around the center, cut out air outlet holes (or vents) with a diameter of 30mm at marked positions to allow air to escape properly.
- Filters for the outlet holes (to prevent backflow into the spray booth). I used inexpensive Xiaomi robot vacuum filters, but any filter will work.
The idea was inspired by YouTuber Barbatos Rex, who deserves a subscription for this excellent concept.
Disclaimer: This filtration system is designed specifically for water-based acrylic paints. It may not effectively capture fumes or VOCs from solvent-based paints, so please use appropriate ventilation if working with those materials.
