Therearelotsofgoodsugarcookierecipesontheinternet, and they would all work fine. As far as recipe size, you are going to want one that contains 1 to 1½ cups of flour. Here is the recipe I used and some pictures to show all the fun I had making these.
Cookies:
½ c butter
½ c granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 egg
1 3/8 c flour
3/8 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp salt
Bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees
Frosting
¼ c butter
2 ¼ c powdered sugar
4 tbsp milk
¼ tsp vanilla
green food coloring
yellow food coloring
optional ¼ tsp peppermint extract
Making the Dough
First, mix the sugar, butter, egg, and vanilla. Then mix in the flour, baking soda, and salt. Be sure to sift the baking soda to avoid sour clumps.
Wrap the dough in two balls and let chill in the fridge for at least an hour.
Making the Frosting
Mix all the ingredients. The peppermint is delicious and festive. After mixing, add the coloring. Scoop out a little bit to a separate bowl to make it yellow. (I forgot to do this so it is all green). Put the frosting in piping bags or plastic bags with the corner snipped off. Let chill in the fridge until the dough it done chilling
Cutting and Baking
Roll out the dough on a flowered surface. You may need to let the dough warm up a bit if it is splitting instead of rolling. You should roll the dough about ¼ to ½ inch thick or 6-12 mm. Cut any extra dough into whatever sized layers you want. I did a few of the largest and some extra star toppers.Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. They will not get brown. Let cool for a few minutes on the pan before transferring to a cooling rack as they are still soft.
Decorate and Enjoy
Frost, stack, and share. You can do all of these things or none, it is up to you. Just make sure the cookies are cool before putting frosting on or it will just melt off.
