The Secret Word - Fun Competitive Word Game

Introducing The Secret Word, an entertaining two-player word search game that combines strategic thinking with vocabulary skills! This tabletop game brings the thrill of word guessing on games like you'd find online into a face-to-face format that's perfect for game nights, classrooms, or casual play. One player becomes the word master, creating a secret five-letter word, while the other player attempts to deduce it through clever guessing and deductive reasoning. With each guess, colored pegs provide crucial clues, creating an engaging battle of wits that everyone will enjoy.

Game Components

• 1 Game Board with integrated peg slots
• 1 Privacy Shield (for hiding the secret word)
• 1 Letter Tray (nestable design - print multiple for convenience)
• Green Score Pegs (for correct letter, correct position)
• Yellow Score Pegs (for correct letter, wrong position)
• “Word Guessing Game” Letters (These can now be printed or purchased separately, see recommended kit below)

Non-Printed Components

Pro tip: We recommend having 3 letter sets total - 2 for the guesser and 1 for the word master. This prevents any clever players from deducing the secret word by counting available letters... ask us how we know! 😅

Game Setup

1. Snap the privacy shield onto the game board.
2. Position the game board between two players.
3. Distribute letter trays and “word creation game” tiles. The game works the fastest if you organize the letters alphabetically in the trays. Some of the less common letters will need to share a tray, or you can print multiple stacking trays.
4. Word master selects and places their secret 5-letter word behind the shield.
5. The guessing begins!

How to Play

1. The guesser attempts to solve the secret word, placing their guess using  “word creation game” tiles.
2. After each guess, the word master provides feedback using the colored pegs:
   • Green peg: Correct letter in the correct position.
   • Yellow peg: Correct letter in the wrong position.
3. The guesser gets up to 6 attempts to solve the word.
4. Players can keep score over multiple rounds and switch roles.

Game Variations

• Speed Round: Add a timer for each guess.
• Team Play: Form teams and collaborate on guesses.
• Educational Mode: Limit words to specific categories or vocabulary lists.
• Progressive Challenge: Start with 4-letter words and work up to 6-letter words.

Design Intent

We wanted to create a social word game, similar to the popular online word guessing game, that brings people together face-to-face while exercising vocabulary and deductive reasoning skills. The design focuses on simplicity and reusability, leveraging standard  “word creation game” tiles for a premium feel without the need to print hundreds of letters. The nestable letter trays and sturdy shield design ensure this game will be a lasting addition to your collection.
