Description

This is a heavy duty wall mounted filament spool holder I designed. I wanted something I could attach to the shelves above my printer for use with filaments I can't normally run in my AMS lite like carbon fiber or glow in the dark.

I designed it to have versatile mounting options. It can either be mounted directly to wall using the screw holes on the mounting plate, or, what I did to mount it to the front of some shelves above my printer, mount using the through hole.

There's three total parts; the spool holder, and two different mounting plates; one is a basic round mounting plate, and the other uses the filament guide from the stock A1 filament holder. There's two plates, each having a spool holder and one of the two wall mounts; just print the one that works best for your needs.

I printed these in PETG for strength, but PLA would probably work fine as well.

What you'll need:

For mounting with screws:

  • x2 #8 or metric equivalent flat head screws on the length appropriate for your mounting location. These are what you'll use to secure the wall mount plate to the wall (or whatever you're attaching the mount to).
  • x1 M5 x 100mm socket head cap screw. This goes through the center of the Spool Holder and screws into the M5 nut that press fits into the back of the wall mount plate.
  • x1 M5 washer. This goes on the M5 x 100mm cap screw before you insert it into the spool holder.
  • x1 M5 hex nut. This press fits into the back of the wall mount plate. I used a nylock nut, but regular hex nuts should work fine as well.
  • x1 Bambu A1 PTFE Tube Connector. If you have an A1, one of these came with it on the stock spool holder. Or you can order one from bambu. If you print the basic wall mount, you don't need this part.
  • A short section of PTFE tube. This goes in the connector to give the filament a smooth path. I used some cutoffs from the gray bambu tubing that comes with the A1 and A1 mini printers. Obviously not needed if you decide to just use the basic wall mount plate.
  • OPTIONAL: To prevent any noise from the spool rubbing on the spool holder during printing, and to greatly reduce friction, You can apply some UHMW tape to the top of the spool holder. I like the thicker, 10 mil 2" wide tape; the 1" works as well, you just have to be careful with placement and make sure it's where the filament sits.

For mounting with a through hole:

  • x1 M5 x 130mm socket head cap screw. 130mm is long enough to go through 19mm (¾") boards while still having enough room for the washer and nut used to mount the wall mount plat and spool holder.
  • x2 M5 washers. One goes on the cap screw before you insert it into the spool holder, the other will go on the end of the cap screw after inserting it through the hole drilled through whatever you'll be mounting the spool holder to.
  • x1 M5 hex nut. Instead of going on the back of the wall mount plate, this time it goes on the end of the cap screw after inserting it through the hole drilled through your mounting location.
  • x1 7/32" or 5mm drill bit. To drill the through hole where you want to mount the holder. I used 7/32"; a 5mm hole will probably be snug but still work.
  • x1 A1 PTFE Connector. Same as above; no need for this if you use the basic mount.
  • A short section of PTFE tubing. Same as above.
  • UHMW tape. Same as above, optional but recommended.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope this helps out!
