Description

Modeled off of the Exploratorium's resonator demonstration (https://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/resonator), this print in place demonstration shows the phenomonon of resonant frequency.

In this update of version 1, there are two different oscillators – one printed with different lengths and one with different thicknesses (0.6 mm, 0.8 mm, and 1.0 mm). In each design, when you shake the apparatus at just the right frequency, it will match the natural frequency one of the lengths (or thicknesses). With some practice, can drive them independently to a large amplitude oscillation.

The longer the length, the more slowly it tends to vibrate, and the lower its natural frequency. Thus, the long side will resonate at lower frequencies than the short side.

The weaker the spring, the more slowly it tends to vibrate, and the lower its natural frequency. Thus, the thinnest strip on the equal length design will resonate at lower frequencies than the thickest strip.

This is a really simple print with no assembly required so it's easy to make a large collection for students to explore in hands-on exploration.
