What is the Pythagoras Cup?

 

The Pythagoras Cup is a vessel that "punishes" greed. Attributed to the Greek mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras (around 530 BC), this cup is designed to empty completely if filled beyond a certain level. Legend has it that Pythagoras invented it to promote moderation in wine consumption.

 

How Does It Work?

 

The operating principle is based on the combination of communicating vessels and hydrostatic pressure, creating a siphon. Inside the cup, there is a central column with an inverted "U"-shaped duct.

 

Moderate Filling: If liquid is poured to a level below the peak of the "U", the cup behaves like a normal glass.

Overfilling: If the liquid exceeds the highest point of the "U", the hydrostatic pressure pushes the liquid through the duct, triggering a siphon that completely empties the cup through a hole at the base.
