Description

 

This is a puzzle book vault that uses a combination of magnets and sliding parts to lock away it's contents. It can be printed with or without an AMS/multiple materials and the only special hardware required is a pair of 10 x 3 mm magnets for the rear locking pin.

 

Printing

  • The spine should be printed facing up with tree supports
    • You'll want to place an infill modifier at the bottom of the spine where the locking pin goes to ensure strength
    • The AMS version of the spine has text you can easily change or remove. Having it debosed gives better results than flush
  • The spine locking pin should be printed facing up with a high infill percentage and wall count for strength
  • The front and back cover should be printed with their outward sides facing down and the slides facing up. The rear cover should be printed with a layer pause for the magnet insertion
    • When inserting the magnets, ensure that the polarity between the rear pin and the rear cover is correct. When the book is assembled they should repel each other. To ensure this, make sure that the polarity of the magnets in each part that is facing the build plate are opposing. Ie if the north pole of the magnet in the rear cover is facing the built plate, you want the south pole of the locking pin magnet facing the build plate
  • The storage should be printed on its back (storage compartment facing up) with tree supports

Clean Up and Assembly

I've done my best to ensure the tolerances are forgiving enough to not make assembly difficult without making the puzzle loose and rattly. You may need to do some clean up or sanding, especially with the rear magnetic locking pin as that needs to move freely. However with the clearance in the storage compartment and the vent channel, this shouldn't be necessary.

 

To assemble the puzzle vault:

  1. Insert the rear magnetic pin
  2. Slide on the top cover
  3. Slide on the rear magnetic cover. This will force the magnetic pin into position, locking the cover
  4. Slide the spine up so that base of the spine is flush with the base of the storage compartment. If you overshoot this, you won't be able to slide the pin in as the counter-lock pins will get in the way
  5. Slide the spine pine into position, ensuring wider space holes are facing down and the narrow spaced ones facing up
  6. Slide the spine down so it's flush with the covers.

 

Solving the Puzzle

To solve the puzzle, you can follow the assembly instructions in reverse or use this gif.

Some notes on solving the vault:

  • Sliding the spine too far up will engage the “brute force prevention" pins. You have to slide the spine up just enough so it's flush with the storage compartment.
  • Sometimes the friction of the top cover can bind against the rear locking pin, especially you've attempted to slide the cover off without disengaging the pin first. Laying the book down with the rear cover slide out and knocking on the top cover once or twice is usually enough force to dislodge the pin, and gives a little sense of magic to the vault.
