UPDATE:

An updated stl file and print profile has been uploaded. Updated features: reinforced nose, curved nose (mine punctured the drywall one too many times), vertical stabilizer is now printed with the rest of the fighter jet (no more assembly required!). A couple of notes for the updated print profile: the yellow boxes modify the print in that specific area (front one modifies infill density to change center of mass, rear one slows print speed to ensure a quality print). MOVING OR REMOVING THE MODIFIER BOXES WILL EFFECT PRINT QUALITY AND FLIGHT. Most slicers have the ability to add modifier boxes, so if you only download the stl, make these changes in your slicer. In this version I used PETG so it was more impact resistant, but you can also use PLA.

The OG print profile is still available. To assemble: line the slot on the body of the jet with a bead of super glue, insert vertical stabilizer into slot and hold perpendicular to the wings until the glue sets, wait until glue fully dries before throwing. This print profile only has the front modifier box.

The intent behind this model was to create something that wouldn't just sit on the shelf as a display piece. I wanted to design something that was functional as a toy, game, etc., and fun for people of all ages. Everyone loves a classic paper airplane and a fighter jet that functions like a paper airplane is even better. It takes a little bit to get the throwing technique down (a tip is to hold it as I did in the second picture), but once you get the technique, the plane is capable of flying long distances. Good luck and happy flying!

More tips on throwing the jet:

  1. Hold the jet as I did in the second picture
  2. Have a slightly upward angle of release
  3. Find a good medium for the force at which you release it with. Too slow and it will nose dive, too fast and you will have no control.
  4. Ensure that the wings are level at the time of release. If they are not, the jet will not go straight.
  5. Modifying the print profile might change the center of mass and might require a different technique
  6. It might take a bit before you find what works, keep trying and it will work well
