What do you do when you have a 3D printer? Make models to teach your kids scientific principles. Ok, I use it for a lot more than that too, but this is a great activity for learning with kids/students.
It's a simple Syphon demonstration aid.
Easy to print
Has flow direction labelled to help with understanding
Print in place with no supports (IMPORTANT)
How to start - it's like any Syphon:
Fill the tube by sucking water into it.
Plug the tube while full (keep short side in the “upper” container beneath the water the whole time.
Ensure the longer end is lower than the water line of the “upper” container.
Then let go.
Advice:
This is a plastic 3d printed object, wash thoroughly before first use to avoid ingesting microplastics.
The two ends are not so different in height that you can actually show the syphon going both ways. Once the upper container water level lowers somewhat, lift the lower container so the water line becomes higher than the upper container's. This will cause the water to run the other direction.
