Black Hole

Black holes, one of the most mysterious and fascinating object in the universe. In 2019, astronomers were finally able to obtain a direct image of a black hole, confirming without a shadow of a doubt that these mystifying celestial objects are real and not just a mathematical abstraction. 

In this fully 3D printable model, I attempt to capture the stunning visual display from the point of view of an astronaut approaching a supermassive black hole. The accretion disc would appear to fold around the black hole due to gravitational lensing effects. 

The print is 2 plates (black hole & bracket on plate 1 and the accretion disc on plate 2). I used matte black filament for the black hole and the bracket. I also added a slight fuzzy skin effect to the black hole sphere which really gives it a nice matte finish. I used red filament for the accretion disc (perhaps someone could try printing with a nice multicolor filament, I think that would look really slick). The model is simple to assemble.

Update [2025-01-14]: Published new print profile with improved print quality (variable layer height) for the 100% scale model. Also published a 75% scale model which is a good compromise between size & print time (that being said I strongly recommend trying out Gargantua, it's impressive!)
