Description

I had plans for a project involving a layered shadow box using my 3d printer. I found the source model Picture Frame Diorama by @DamianLion, https://makerworld.com/en/models/866933 and liked the concept, but wanted it to be in a different size. Rather than do it as a one-off, I coded it up in openSCAD so the frame could be customized to any project.

To make your own frame:

  • click the Customize button to open the SCAD model in the Parametric Model Maker
  • There are a number of parameters to use, these are the main ones:
    • Layer width = how wide each of your layers will be.
    • Layer height = how tall each of your layers will be.
    • Slot count = how many layer slots you want.
    • Slot thick = how thick your layers will be. Add a little extra
    • Slot sep = how much space to leave between layers.
  • For example, I am printing 5 hueforge layers at 180 x 120 x 2mm for my project.
    • Layer width = 180
    • Layer height = 120
    • Slot count = 5
    • Slot thick = 2.2
    • Slot sep = 2.2
  • The other parameters have pretty good defaults, but feel free to fiddle with them if you need to.
  • Once you have your settings, click Generate to preview.
  • Then click Download to get the 3MF or STL file for your frame.
  • Import the downloaded file into Bambu Studio and set up the print.
    • I like the default 0.20 profile, with infill lowered to 10% and set to Gyroid.
    • It should not need supports if you leave the base upright as published.

Printing notes - As you might see, I had some problems with my black filament stringing, and the corners of my frames lifting off the bed. Those should not be faults in the model, just problems with my choice of filament and its printing profile. You may want to rotate the model on the plate so its not right next to the aux fan on the enclosed printers. The reprint using brown PolyTerra had just a few strings and no warping.
