It belonged to a distinctive group of armored sauropterygians, characterized by a broad, flattened body covered in a mosaic of small, bony plates rather than large scutes. This armor likely provided protection from predators while allowing flexibility in the water. Its limbs were adapted into paddle-like structures for swimming, suggesting a slow but steady lifestyle in shallow coastal seas.
