It is considered an important transitional species in ceratopsian evolution, bridging the gap between early horned dinosaurs and the giant ceratopsids that appeared later. Measuring around 3–4 meters (10–13 feet) in length, Zuniceratops possessed a parrot-like beak, a modest neck frill, and prominent brow horns. Unlike later relatives such as Triceratops, it lacked a large nasal horn. Its discovery provided valuable insights into the early evolution of horned dinosaurs.
