The Woodland Cree along Saskatchewan's Churchill River use a six-season cycle: winter, spring, break-up, summer, fall, and freeze-up. These seasons, each lasting two moon cycles, are marked by changes in the moon and relate to seasonal activities like hunting, fishing, and berry picking. The Swampy Cree, have a similar cycle but with extended winter and summer seasons. During freeze-up and break-up, travel on the river and lakes is limited due to unstable ice, prompting seasonal migrations. The cycle visually mirrors the medicine wheel, moving clockwise through each season.
