Introduction

TL;DR:

The Multi Modular Storage System (MMSS) and the Universal Modular Storage System (UMMS) are two customizable storage solutions, each with unique strengths. MMSS is known for its flexibility and stackable modules side-by-side, while UMMS offers enhanced compatibility, flexibility, and a modern design. An interface piece now allows users to integrate MMSS modules with the UMMS framework, combining the benefits of both systems. This provides a versatile, cost-effective, and sustainable storage solution without requiring users to commit to one system.

Modular storage systems have become essential tools for hobbyists, makers, and professionals alike. Among these, the Multi Modular Storage System (MMSS) has stood out for its practicality and adaptability. Recently, a new system, the Universal Modular Storage System (UMMS), has gained attention for offering an evolved approach to modular storage. While both systems present unique benefits, an innovative interface piece now allows MMSS users to integrate their existing modules into the UMMS framework, combining the best of both worlds.

The MMSS: Previous Modular Storage

The MMSS is widely appreciated for its highly customizable modular design. Key features include:

•    Modularity: The MMSS allows users to create customized configurations with a wide variety of stackable modules side by side that are available, making it perfect for organizing tools, accessories, and small components.

•    Expandability: MMSS allows you to easily add more modules, adapting to different storage requirements.

•    Custom Design: MMSS supports personalization through color and size options with blank parametric modules, enabling users to create storage solutions that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The MMSS has established itself as a reliable and adaptable system for a broad range of applications, especially for users who prioritize flexibility in their storage setups. Just check some of the examples that some members have created.

With time modules and extras made this system a very big project with the addition of the Storage Rack for the MMSS

And the imagem only shows a part of it, other modules are available. With time the UMSS will get something like this too, but for now, you  can store the modules on:

  • box with lid;
  • wall;
  • drawer;
  • stands (like the one at the start of this post).

UMMS: The latest Magnetic Modular Storage

Building on the strengths of MMSS, the UMMS introduces several improvements aimed at expanding its versatility and usability. Some key aspects of the UMMS include:

•    Universal Compatibility: The UMMS is designed with a focus on universality, making it compatible with a wide variety of accessories and modules, offering broader options for users with different prints, MMSS was more oriented for bambu lab printers.

•    Flexibility: One of the key features of UMMS is its flexibility in rearranging modules. Users can easily move, swap, or reconfigure modules as needed, thanks to the system’s universal design, allowing for smooth transitions between layouts. This makes it easy to adapt quickly without being tied to a fixed structure.

•    Modern Aesthetic: With a streamlined and modern design, UMMS offers a more refined appearance without compromising on the practicality and functionality that modular storage demands.

These updates make UMMS an excellent choice for users looking for a modernized storage solution while still enjoying the flexibility of modularity.

MMSS and UMMS: Different Systems, Different Strengths

Although both MMSS and UMMS serve the same purpose—providing modular storage solutions—their approaches differ in key areas. The MMSS is ideal for users who have already invested in its system and value its established modularity and ease of expansion. The UMMS, on the other hand, offers a more refined experience with universal compatibility and updated modules.

It’s important to note that neither system is inherently superior; they are simply different solutions tailored to varying needs. For those transitioning from the MMSS to the UMMS, or those who wish to use both systems simultaneously, a new interface piece offers a convenient way to integrate them.

The Interface Piece: Bridging UMSS a MMSS

To address the need for cross-system compatibility, an interface piece has been developed, allowing users to connect UMSS modules to the MMSS framework. This provides a cost-effective and practical solution for those looking to blend the benefits of both systems.

Key Features of the Interface Piece:

•    Compatibility: The interface piece enables seamless integration between MMSS and UMMS modules, ensuring that the locking and alignment mechanisms work together smoothly.

•    Cost Efficiency: Users with an existing MMSS setup can avoid replacing their entire storage system by utilizing their current modules within the UMMS structure.

•    Environmental Impact: By reusing MMSS modules, the interface promotes sustainability, reducing the need for additional materials or new purchases.

•    Ease of Installation: Designed for straightforward attachment, the interface piece doesn’t require complex modifications, making it accessible to a wide audience.

How It Works

The interface piece functions by aligning the connection points of the UMSS and MMSS base, box or case. It maintains the structural integrity of both systems and ensures that they lock securely into place. This allows users to combine the established customization options of the MMSS with the modern, universal design of the UMMS without compromising functionality. The UMSS modules use magetic connection, and the interface part between the UMSS and the MMSS should be fitted with a tight adjustment to ensure it stays in place. If you decide to permanently attach the module to the interface, simply apply a drop of superglue to each corner.

  • MMSS  sizes made available:
    • 1x1
    • 1x2
    • 1x3
    • 1x4
    • 2x2
    • 2x3
    • 3x3
    • 2x4
    • 3x4
    • 4x4

Conclusion

The development of an interface piece to bridge the gap between UMSS and MMSS opens up exciting possibilities for users who want to combine the strengths of both modular storage systems. Whether you are a long-time MMSS user or are drawn to the latest advancements of the UMMS, this integration provides a seamless way to create a storage solution that is tailored to your specific needs.

By uniting these two systems, you can enjoy the flexibility, compatibility, and customization of both worlds—without having to choose between them.

Tools Used to make this project

I’d like to clarify a common question I receive about the tools I use for my projects. This project was modeled using Autodesk’s Fusion 360 CAD software, which I find ideal for creating complex 3D models. Over the years, I have used other CAD applications, but I ultimately chose Fusion 360 due to its flexibility and ease of use. It is also one of the most accessible CAD tools for this type of community, offering free licenses for personal use. Additionally, its mesh modeling tools are some of the best I’ve worked with.

Other tools are also used to achieve the final result. For example, rendered images are sometimes generated directly in Fusion 360, while others are done using Blender (I dont model in this software, It is not parametric neather it has a timeline.
It's rare for me to start a project directly in CAD, as it can disrupt my creative flow. For this reason, I prefer to begin with hand sketches, sometimes with great detail, and only afterward do I translate the design into the CAD tool.

I hope this answers one of the frequent questions I receive.

Thanks

I want to extend my sincere thanks to a supporter, Steampunk Prints for encouraging me to develop this integration system. I know it's a compromise, and not perfect (area loss), but for users like Steampunk who want to combine both systems, this solution is now a reality—thanks to your input. Your suggestion has opened up new possibilities for many, and I truly appreciate your motivation and support throughout the process.
