Description
This is just a remix of my older organizing tray for R8 weldon-type mill holders, to bring it into Gridfinity. It was already very close to the right width, so I lengthened it a little, widened it very slightly, added Gridfinity squares to the bottom, and modified it for printing in the horizontal orientation (it was originally designed to print vertically).
There are already Gridfinity collet holders for the R8 taper available, and while this will hold collets if that's how you want to use it, the purpose is to hold a mill holder with a tool bit installed, and not tip forward even if it's a relatively heavy bit. It should work with holders for up to ½" shank tools; I also have a different tray for ¾" shank mill holders, which I may bring into Gridfinity at some point.
There is a recess for a 10mm x 3mm round magnet to be pressed into the end to hold the taper in place. When I originally designed the tray, I experimented with smaller magnets, and found that they didn't do a good job of retaining the taper in the tray. This should hold it in place unless you really slam the drawer it is in open and shut.
Like my other Gridfinity models, the bases are altered to accept 6x3 magnets as a press fit, with the upper surface of the magnet holes modified to make the slicer bridge across correctly for a clean result. The unit pictured was printed out of Polymaker matte gray PLA on a Bear upgraded Mk3S+, using a 0.6mm nozzle at 0.3mm layer height.
Edit 10NOV24:
Revised the model to make the recess for the 10mm magnet not as tight. I'd had no trouble with it and PLA or PETG, but when I printed several of these out of ABS on my Voron, I found that due to material shrinkage, I got some cracking when the magnet was pressed in. So I increased the recess diameter slightly. Now the 10mm magnets press in smoothly when the holder is printed in ABS, and it's still tight enough to hold the magnet if PLA or PETG is used.
