Preparing for tire swap season, these marked tire caps shall help by permanently marking the tire position.
Print using PETG , TPU or similar weathering resistant material
Print the first 3 layers very slowly to have precise letters embossed.
Swap Filament after 0.6mm z height (3x .2mm layers) for a color offset of the letters.
The black/green title pictures where printed using a .3mm nozzle and Prusament PETG.
Jayo Easy ABS was used for the white/orange print.
Why do workshops mark tire positions at all?
1. Preserve Wear Patterns
- Tires develop unique wear patterns depending on their position on the vehicle (e.g., front tires wear faster due to steering and braking forces). Marking ensures each tire can be returned to its original position if rotation or repositioning is not intended, maintaining balance and handling consistency.
2. Tire Rotation Strategy
- Professionals often rotate tires between positions to equalize wear and extend their lifespan. Marking helps track where each tire was previously mounted, ensuring proper rotation patterns are followed during future swaps.
3. Diagnosing Issues
- If a specific tire shows unusual wear or damage, its marked position helps diagnose the root cause, such as misalignment, suspension issues, or incorrect inflation.
4. Seasonal Tire Storage
- When switching between summer and winter tires, marking ensures that tires are reinstalled in the same or correct position the following season, especially if no rotation is planned.
5. Avoid Mixing Tread Depths
- Tire positioning affects performance, especially on all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicles. Mixing worn and less-worn tires improperly can cause drivetrain strain. Marking ensures the same tires stay paired on the correct axles if needed.
6. Balance and Alignment Maintenance
- When tires are balanced for a specific corner of the vehicle, moving them arbitrarily can affect balance or alignment. Marking ensures the balanced configuration remains optimal.
