I designed this model to be printed without supports. This model does not have a ‘rolling hub/shaft’ design as embossing/cutting shortbread requires substantial pressure. If you prefer, you can use the embosser/cutter without the handles just by pressing firmly on the roller with your palms while rolling the embosser forward. YMMV.
I attached both .3mf and .stl files, you may need to rotate the objects before printing. Embosser halves print on the flat. Pins print upright. Roller handle prints upright. No support required.
Print notes
- I use PETG as it is food safe, easy to clean up and not as brittle as PLA
- I used Polymaker PETG yellow for this model as, for whatever reason, it is much ‘slicker’ than others I have used
- I printed my version on an OPXL5H with .6 nozzle, input shaper, .15 structural layers. I prefer a 20% gyroid infill for speed and strength.
- Handles can be printed with less infill
- For assembly, insert/glue 4 pins into one half and then insert/glue into the second half with a bead of glue on the perimeter of the roller flat. I like to use gorilla glue clear as it expands slightly when curing. Just remember to spray the roller flat side with some water as that activates the glue. I haven't had as much luck with superglue, but YMMV. Use rubber bands to secure the parts while the glue cures. Trim away any expansive glue from seams. The same applies to the handles if you choose to use those.
Cookie notes
- Many shortbread recipes have hints/tweaks to keep the embossed design and not spread
- Use a lower heat (325F)
- Chill/freeze the embossed cookie before baking
- Use some powdered sugar, instead of all plain sugar, as powdered has cornstarch
- Don't use parchment paper for baking, use bare baking sheet
- Don't overmix/cream the sugar/butter as that introduces air which can cause cookie spread
- You'll need to use substantial pressure when rolling as shortbread dough is robust
