Description

Not ready to spend hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on a multicolor printer?   Want to add some pizazz to your boring prints?
 

Turn nearly any FDM printer into a multicolor printer with the Sharpie Marker System (SMS)!

The SMS works with nearly any filament printer that uses 1.75mm filament.     Just place it anywhere between your roll of (clear or white) PLA filament and the print head, load your desired color fine point Sharpie Markers and click print.   Want to change colors?  Just swap to a different color marker.   Mix marker colors for interesting effects.

The SMS system is threaded on both ends with M10 x 1.0 threads to fit standard pneumatic fittings.   If you want to attach it to an extruder or hot end that already uses M10 threads, you can utilize a simple nipple fitting.
 


The closer you place the SMS to the print head, the more accurate you can be with your color changes.

There are two M3 holes on the side that can be used to affix the SMS to your printer.    If your printer utilizes aluminum extrusions for its construction, these holes will fit M3 screws which can be used in combination with T-nuts to affix it to your printer.
 

Marker Selection

The SMS works with any Sharpie Original-style fine point markers.   Bolder colored markers will provide a stronger coloring effect.


Filament Selection

The SMS works best with clear or white PLA.

  • Elegoo Clear PLA Filament
  • Polymaker PLA Pro Filament
     
Printing Instructions
  • Print in an upright Y orientation
  • Print with standard “touching build plate” supports for a 45° overhang.  
  • If printing to attach directly to a print head consider printing with ASA or PC to avoid possible deformation from heat.    For all mounting other locations PLA should be adequate.
