Description
Well, I needed a sheath for a paring knife in the kitchen box of my camper. Printing a knife sheath is mostly problematic since overhangs and layer orientation tend to make the part weak, ugly or simply impossible to print.
Then I had the idea to print the sheath flat, thermally fold it together and fix it with printed snaps. This works so ridiculously well and prints fast that it's more a kind of proof of concept for a lot of applications, where you need flat surfaces with space in between.
It escalated a bit, so now it has several options to mount it with paracord or straps, a small drainage hole at the tip and a recessed welt that should prevent the knife from cutting your hand. Also the retention catch keeps the knife safely in.
Use the lower (low temp) part of a lighter flame gently on the spine of the sheath while bending it to fold it. Then use pliers with some cardboard (to protect the plastic) and snap both halves together. The process is shown in the gif.
The longer sheath fits the shorter straight and shorter serrated paring knife as well as the short curved fruit knife (see pics).
The short sheath only fits the curved fruit knife.
If you really want that Kydex-look, print it in PETG on a textured print bed.
Edit:
Added hooked version of the short sheath for easier pocket deployment.
A kitchen knife is still a knife, so be responsible and take care while sheathing und unsheathing it.
There is also a travel friendly print file for a small knife sharpener with the same technique:
