Description

This is an adaptation of Eddie the Engineers' LED mounting, which incorporates baffles so that the LEDs are not shinning in your eyes when looking from in front of the printer. Instead of the “bead on a string” approach like the original design, this is a single piece. It mounts using (3) M3x3030 extrusion tee-nuts and M3x10 socket head screws. At one end there is an anchor for a zip tie to guide the wires back into the extrusion for routing back to the controller.

This solves several problems. The first being the difficulty in mounting such a long string of LEDs with separate holders into the extrusion. With this design the strip can be feed in from one end while on the bench. The other problem is that to make the baffle concept work the best, the LEDs need to be located next to the baffle towards the front, so by wrapping the wires with electrical tape and securing with a zip tie the location of the LEDs can be fixed before mounting under the extrusion.

This design is based on a LED strip 10 mm wide with 6 LEDs per 100 mm length that can be cut, and a total length of 400 mm of LEDs.

To make the second holder for the other side use the mirror function in PrusaSlicer.

I have the LEDs on when the printer is on, at 50% power, connected to the HE3 outputs on the Octopus board using this configuration in printer.cfg:

[led sidelights]
white_pin: mcu:PB11
hardware_pwm: True
initial_WHITE: 0.5

No supports are required, I printed it in PCTG and had to clean the overhangs with a razor knife to feed in the srip but otherwise it was simple to assemble and install. It is shown installed on a RatRig VCore 4 400.
