Description

This is a 3D printable mini sewing kit for darning and hand stitching! It features needle storage, space for 3 standard size (35mm diameter, 45mm height) thread spools as well as a large compartment for supplies like yarn, buttons, and small scissors. The lid to the compartment is slightly concave, so your needles won't run off! The whole box closes using 4 embedded magnets for convenient construction. This little kit is the hero of small workspaces!

Printing Instructions

All components have a 0.4 mm tolerance which is more than enough for basically all printers. I recommend using a 0.2 mm layer height for all of the files for faster print speeds, but the compartment lid does benefit from a smaller layer height due to its shallow slopes. A little glue stick around the edges may help warping on the larger parts.

  • For embedding magnets:
  1. Use the PrusaSlicer pause print feature if possible to pause at the layer just before the rectangular holes are closed off on the Main and Lid files.
  2.  Then, insert a 10x5x2 mm magnet and resume printing. It may be helpful to use something sticky to make sure the magnets do not jump to the print head.
  3. Do not use a steel nozzle!

To source the magnets, this is a popular size on Amazon, but I also do recommend websites like K&J Magnetics and SuperMagnetMan as well. Be sure the magnets are magnetized through the thickness as shown. (most are made this way)

If the magnets do end up jumping out, fear not! I made it so that only 2 layers cover the magnets, so a hobby knife can be used to cut out these layers so you can just glue the magnet in.

  • For final assembly:
  1. Line up the hinge holes on the lid and box.
  2. Insert the rod through the holes.
  3. Add a small amount of glue to the inside of the cap and press it onto the end of the rod.
  4. Find a piece of foam (I used foam board) and glue it to the inside of the lid like in the photos.

Most importantly:

Don't forget to like and post your makes!
